S.N.S. Herning
S.N.S. Herning was founded in 1931 by Søren Nielsen Skyt (1899-1972). As a young man, he made a living from selling knitted garments of his own making in central Jutland, Denmark. In the late 1920’es, he learned about a way of knitting garments with “bubble” patterns that would serve as insulation and protect its wearer from the rough weather at sea.
Knitting machines with so-called Jacquard strapping was being imported to Denmark from England and Germany – and Søren Nielsen Skyt bought one, and set out to have the machinery make these patterns.
S.N.S. Herning has been knitting the renowned Fisherman’s sweater after the exact same recipe as that of the founder since 1931. The mill is still situated in the city of Herning, and the knits are being crafted with the use of the same traditional technique and knowledge – with the son of the founder heading the production.
Every season, the main part of the collection of knits is either complete re-makes of old styles or styles that are based on knitting patterns picked up from archives at the mill. It is all about traditional technique.
The logo with the two fishermen in a dinghy initially signified that S.N.S HERNING crafted sturdy knits for the Danish fishermen. Today it is a daily remainder that we should always try to produce something that has a purpose and will last. |
