New York Hat and Cap Co. was established in 1982 by Arnold Ackerman and his wife Barbara. Arnold has been in the headwear industry for over 35 years. In the 1960s and 1970s he was head buyer for Rossett Headwear, at the time the largest headwear wholesaler in the United States.

When New York Hat & Cap Co. was formed, Arnold and Barbara's goal was to bring hats back to the "MTV" generation as well as providing classic and functional styles. Soon New York Hats were in thousands of boutiques and specialty shops around the country. New York Hats have also been featured in various films, videos, fashion shows and dozens of magazines.

New York Hat & Cap Co. is truly a family owned and operated business. In 1985, Arnold and Barbara's son Adam joined the company and manages the shipping department. The state of the art distribution center is located in Chester, New York approximately 60 miles Northwest of Manhattan. In the years to follow, daughters Laura and Jennifer joined the company to design and run the sales and customer service departments.
